Cost to register a new car: duty, rego and plates by state

Registering a new $50,000 mid-size SUV for the first time costs $2,352.70 in Queensland and $4,292.72 in Western Australia. Most of the gap is stamp duty, which is charged on the price of the car and varies a lot between states.

Checked 9 October 2026. Figures come from the same fee tables as the compare every state calculator.

First registration cost for three new cars

This is the upfront cost of registering a new car: stamp duty on its price, 12 months of registration including CTP, and number plates where the state lists a fee. An example CTP amount is added in NSW, Queensland and the ACT. It does not include the price of the car, delivery or dealer charges.

How we worked it out

Every figure comes from the same calculation that powers each state’s rego calculator, in its “new vehicle” mode, using fee tables checked in October 2026 against Service NSW, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, Service SA, Transport Services, Access Canberra, Department of Transport, Motor Vehicle Registry, VicRoads. CTP examples: NSW $458, Queensland $400, ACT $397. Your own quote will differ. You are welcome to quote these figures with a link back to this page. Please say the car, the date and that they are estimates.
