What it costs to fuel

Fuel use 8.3 L/100 km at 283.1 c/L for diesel, the Sydney average in the NRMA weekly fuel report of 5 October 2026. Pump prices change daily and vary by town, so treat the dollars as examples. The last column is a typical electric car using 17 kWh/100 km on a mostly-home mix, for comparison. Official fuel figures come from a laboratory test, so real use is usually higher, especially when towing or loaded.

How we worked it out

Rego and stamp duty use the same calculation that powers each state’s rego calculator, in its “new vehicle” mode. Fuel and energy use come from the Australian Government Green Vehicle Guide. CTP examples: NSW $458, Queensland $400, ACT $397. Not included: insurance, servicing, tyres, luxury car tax and dealer charges. These are estimates, not a quote.
