Fuel cost of Australia’s best-selling cars: litres per 100 km and a year at the pump

Among popular models, a year of driving 12,000 km costs about $1,107.29 at the pump in the Hyundai Kona (hybrid petrol) and about $3,045.60 in the Toyota LandCruiser 300 (hybrid petrol). Small hybrid cars and SUVs sit at the cheap end, big diesel utes and 4WDs at the dear end, and diesel costs more per litre than petrol.

How we worked it out

Litres per 100 km is the combined figure for each variant in the Australian Government Green Vehicle Guide. Cost per 100 km is litres per 100 km times the price per litre. Cost for 12,000 km is that multiplied by 12,000 / 100. The models were picked from the best sellers in 2026 so far. You are welcome to quote these figures with a link back to this page. Please say the date and that they are estimates.
