Why rego costs so much more in some states than others

Every state charges for rego in a different way, so the cheapest state depends on the car. A small hatch is cheapest in Tasmania, a large SUV in Tasmania and a dual-cab ute in Tasmania. The dearest for the large SUV is Australian Capital Territory, at $1,260.70 a year.

Checked 9 October 2026. Figures come from the same fee tables as the compare every state calculator.

How each state sets the fee

What that does to four different cars

Yearly rego, including compulsory third party (CTP) cover, for each car: Small hatch, a 3-4 cylinder, 1,500 cc car at 1,100 kg; Medium sedan, a 4-cylinder, 2,000 cc car at 1,400 kg; Large SUV, a 6-cylinder, 3,500 cc car at 2,000 kg; Dual-cab ute, a 4-cylinder, 2,800 cc ute at 2,300 kg. An example CTP amount is added in NSW, Queensland and the ACT, where CTP is bought separately.

How we worked it out

Every figure comes from the same calculation that powers each state’s rego calculator, using fee tables checked in October 2026 against Service NSW, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, Service SA, Transport Services, Access Canberra, Department of Transport, Motor Vehicle Registry, VicRoads. The ACT assumes emissions category A, B, D and C for the four cars in order. Not included: plates, safety checks, late fees, concessions and heavy vehicles.
